The Tecno Pova 8 Pro 5G has been launched in Indonesia at a price of Rp 5,999,000. This phone stands out with its futuristic design featuring Mini LED lights, a 144Hz AMOLED display, a 50 MP Sony camera, and a robust 6,500 mAh battery. Its appeal lies not only in its distinctive look but also in the combination of gaming capabilities and everyday usability. However, the Dimensity 7400 Ultimate chipset isn't the fastest in its price range. So, how well does the Tecno Pova 8 Pro 5G perform in gaming? Let’s explore its camera quality and battery life in this review.
Futuristic Design
One of the standout features of the Tecno Pova 8 Pro 5G is its unique design. Inspired by the aesthetics of an interstellar spaceship, the reviewed unit comes in a Tundra Green colorway. This military-inspired green provides a tough yet futuristic vibe, setting it apart from typical mid-range phones that usually feature plain or glossy finishes.
The back showcases a blend of dark green and gray with geometric patterns reminiscent of a spaceship’s metallic panels. The textured edges enhance its industrial feel. Notable design elements include a bolt-like accent, sharp lines, and the vertically arranged 'POVA' logo, complemented by orange touches. This combination makes the Tundra Green model distinctive and characterful without being overly flashy.
At the center of attention is the triangular camera module with rounded corners, featuring the Alive Matrix Display. This innovative feature utilizes 177 Mini LED lights to present various light animations that respond to over 49 scenarios, including notifications, incoming calls, charging, and gaming activities. While not essential, the Alive Matrix adds a unique character to the device.
Despite housing a large 6,500 mAh battery, Tecno has managed to keep the device relatively slim at just 7.39 mm thick and weighing 189 grams. However, the plastic construction means it doesn’t completely match the premium feel of metal-framed competitors. The phone does come with IP66, IP68, and IP69K ratings for dust and water resistance in specific testing conditions, along with a customizable button for user-defined functions.
Display and Multimedia Experience
The Tecno Pova 8 Pro 5G features a 6.78-inch HyperLux AMOLED display with a resolution of 1.5K (2644 x 1208 pixels). This screen supports a refresh rate of up to 144Hz and is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 7i. The display quality is one of its strongest selling points, delivering vibrant colors, high contrast, and deep blacks.
With a brightness level of up to 1,600 nits in High Brightness Mode (HBM) and peak brightness reaching 4,500 nits under certain conditions, the screen is impressive. The 144Hz refresh rate promises smooth animations, although not all apps automatically run at this setting, with some still using 60Hz or 90Hz.
Two stereo speakers with Dolby Atmos support enhance the multimedia experience, making it enjoyable for watching movies and gaming.
Camera Capabilities
The Pova 8 Pro 5G features a primary 50 MP camera equipped with a Sony LYTIA 700C sensor, which includes optical image stabilization (OIS) to reduce blurriness during photo and video capture. This combination offers a strong capability for capturing detailed images, especially in well-lit conditions.
For wider shots, an 8 MP ultrawide camera is available, although it has a lower resolution than the main camera, which may lead to noticeable differences in quality under less-than-ideal lighting. The 13 MP front camera is designed for selfies and video calls.
Tecno has also integrated AI features to enhance photography, such as AI Sky Shop, which allows users to change the sky in their photos creatively. Additionally, the Portrait AIGC feature employs generative AI to create artistic variations of portrait photos. In the gallery, AI Studio offers photo editing capabilities, including object removal and image expansion, yielding impressive results.
Performance and Battery Life
Powered by the MediaTek Dimensity 7400 Ultimate 5G chipset and a Tecno-designed graphics chip, the Pova 8 Pro 5G comes with 8 GB of RAM and 256 GB of internal storage. Benchmark testing revealed an AnTuTu score surpassing one million points, indicating solid performance for daily tasks, multitasking, and gaming.
The device recorded an AnTuTu score of 1,060,789, showcasing its potential for handling everyday tasks and gaming effectively. Meanwhile, the Geekbench scores of 925 (single-core) and 3,363 (multi-core) provide insight into its processing capabilities.
To manage heat during intensive use, Tecno has included a vapor chamber cooling system. Running on HiOS 16, the Pova 8 Pro 5G offers several AI features, although promised software updates are limited to two generations.
In terms of battery life, the 6,500 mAh capacity is impressive for a device of this thickness. Users engaged in browsing, social media, video streaming, and communication can expect a full day of usage comfortably. In a PCMark Work 3.1 Battery Life test, the device achieved a remarkable 15 hours and 51 minutes, indicating good efficiency. However, actual daily performance will depend on screen brightness, network usage, and gaming intensity.
The device supports 45W Super Charge fast charging, which, while effective, is not the fastest option available in this price segment.
In summary, the Tecno Pova 8 Pro 5G presents an attractive package for users seeking a device with a unique design, quality display, and durable battery life. Its Dimensity 7400 Ultimate chipset provides sufficient performance for daily use and gaming, while the 50 MP main camera and AI photography features offer impressive capabilities. At a price of Rp 5,999,000 for the 8 GB/256 GB variant, it’s a compelling choice for those prioritizing distinct design, great display, and long battery life, though competitive gamers may find better options elsewhere.
