Spider-Man: Brand New Day is set to deliver more dynamic and thrilling action scenes. Director Destin Daniel Cretton has revealed that the Marvel's Spider-Man game developed by Insomniac Games has been a major inspiration for this latest film.
Inspiration from Video Games
In an interview with Polygon, Cretton shared that the stunt team for Spider-Man: Brand New Day extensively studied Peter Parker's movements from the PS4 game. They even captured screenshots from the game to serve as reference points during production.
Director's Gaming Experience
Although Cretton admitted that he is not an avid gamer, he has taken the time to play the game himself. He emphasized the importance of surrounding himself with passionate gamers. “Many people in our stunt department are huge fans of the game. They often bring gameplay screen grabs to us, asking, ‘Can we do this move?’ That has been an incredible source of inspiration,” he explained.
Fluid Movements on Screen
Marvel's Spider-Man is renowned for its smooth and satisfying movement system. Players can swing between buildings, run along walls, and execute various attacks against enemies. The production team aims to translate this fluidity into a live-action format. They did not only analyze previous Spider-Man films but also studied how Insomniac made Spider-Man's movements feel fast, natural, and powerful.
Realistic Stunts and Techniques
In addition to drawing inspiration from the game, Cretton and his team have also looked at GoPro footage from wingsuit athletes and parkour practitioners. This footage is used to create a more realistic sensation of diving from heights, enhancing the viewer's experience and adrenaline levels.
This approach is intended to make the audience feel as if they are swinging and soaring through the skies of New York City alongside Spider-Man.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day marks Tom Holland's fourth solo film as Peter Parker. It is also Cretton's directorial debut with a Spider-Man film, following his work on Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. The storyline takes place several years after Spider-Man: No Way Home, where Peter now leads a more solitary life, having been forgotten by those closest to him. His role as Spider-Man becomes the primary focus of his existence.
Cretton aims to present a more personal and grounded story while still paying homage to the comic's roots and the elements that fans cherish.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day features an impressive cast, including Tom Holland, Zendaya, Jacob Batalon, Sadie Sink, Jon Bernthal, and Mark Ruffalo. The screenplay is penned by Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers, with the film set to release on July 29, 2026.
