How iPhone Handoff Works
Recent discoveries by a user on the MacRumors forum, who goes by the username 'pdfu,' have shed light on how this new feature operates within iOS 27 beta 8. Using two simulated iPhones through Device Hub in Xcode 27, they successfully demonstrated the functionality of iPhone Handoff.
To activate iPhone Handoff, users can navigate to the Settings app, specifically within the Cellular menu. During the setup process, users will select which iPhone will serve as the primary device and which one will act as the secondary companion device.
Key Features and Functionality
According to Apple, the main eSIM associated with the user will remain on the primary iPhone, while the secondary iPhone will use a companion eSIM. This setup allows users to switch between the two devices seamlessly while retaining the same phone number, as highlighted by MacRumors.
All cellular settings can be managed from the primary iPhone, and location sharing will depend on which device is actively using the phone number at any given moment. This could be particularly useful for those who frequently switch between devices or for individuals who might leave one phone at home.
Requirements for iPhone Handoff
To utilize iPhone Handoff, users will need two iPhones running iOS 27. It appears that support from mobile network operators will also be necessary. Reports on MacRumors suggest that T-Mobile in the United States and Deutsche Telekom in Germany are likely to be among the first carriers to offer this feature.
Distinguishing iPhone Handoff from Continuity
Currently, it seems that iPhone Handoff operates differently from Apple’s existing Continuity features. Although both fall under a similar umbrella, iPhone Handoff is designed to function at the network and eSIM level, rather than merely relying on Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity.
For instance, if the primary iPhone is turned off and left at home, the secondary iPhone can still connect to the cellular network independently using the existing phone number. This could significantly enhance user experience and connectivity, making it easier to stay in touch, regardless of which device is more convenient at the moment.
