Japanese Camera Market Shows Signs of Recovery After Two Decades

The Resurgence of the Japanese Camera Industry

The Japanese camera market is beginning to show signs of recovery after nearly 20 years of decline, primarily due to the rise of smartphones equipped with advanced cameras. Recent data from the Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry (METI) indicates a notable increase in camera production in Japan for the years 2024 and 2025, marking the first consecutive growth in almost two decades.

Historical Context of Camera Production

Historically, the production of cameras in Japan experienced a steep decline following the introduction of smartphones. In 2006, just before the first iPhone was released, Japan produced approximately 37 million still cameras and 12 million video cameras. Fast forward to 2024, and production had plummeted to roughly two million units due to the widespread adoption of smartphones.

Shifts in Camera Preferences

In addition to the overall production decline, there has been a significant shift in the types of cameras being produced. The demand for SLR and DSLR cameras has declined sharply, with domestic shipments dropping from around 12 million units in 2020 to about one million units by 2025. In contrast, mirrorless cameras have seen a more favorable trend, with shipments increasing from approximately 3.3 million units in 2020 to around 5.4 million units in 2024, before slightly declining to about 4.6 million units in 2025.

The Rise of Compact Cameras

Interestingly, compact cameras are also experiencing a revival. After hitting a low of approximately 3.9 million units in 2023, shipments rose to about 4.4 million units in 2024 and are projected to reach 5.2 million units in 2025. This resurgence is attributed to younger consumers seeking higher quality photos and videos for social media, surpassing what smartphones can offer.

The Future Outlook

While the Japanese camera industry is on the mend, it still has a long way to go to reach its former glory from the early 2000s. However, the latest trends suggest that specialized cameras, particularly mirrorless and compact models, are finding their niche again amid the smartphone dominance. This evolution in consumer preference could pave the way for a more vibrant future for the camera market in Japan.
