Google Confirms Price Increase for Pixel 11 Due to RAM Crisis

In a recent interview with 9to5Google, Shakil Barkat, Google's Vice President of Device & Services, confirmed that the price of the Pixel 11 will see an increase. This decision comes as part of the company's efforts to create more efficient Android devices amidst a significant RAM shortage affecting technology suppliers.

Understanding the RAM Crisis

The tech industry is currently facing an unprecedented crisis in memory RAM availability. Barkat emphasized that the rise in RAM prices has been unlike anything seen before. According to Morgan Stanley data referenced by Barkat, the cost of 1 GB of RAM has surged from $2.80 in 2025 to $12 this year, marking a staggering sixfold increase.

Google's Commitment to Consumers

Despite these challenges, Google has strived to shield its consumers from the volatility in supply. However, Barkat acknowledged that the economic landscape has fundamentally shifted, and the company is not immune to these changes. As a result, adjustments in pricing will be applied across the entire Pixel device lineup, including the upcoming Pixel 11 series. Specific details about these changes are expected to be shared on August 12.

Implications for Existing Devices

Recent leaks suggest that the basic version of the Pixel 11 Pro will see a reduction in RAM from 16 GB to 12 GB. Preliminary reports indicate that both the Pixel 11 and Pixel 11 Pro may experience a price increase of around $100. However, a boost in storage capacity to 256 GB could mitigate some of the effects of this price hike. Furthermore, it is anticipated that the Pixel 11 Pro XL and Pixel 11 Pro Fold could also see an immediate price rise of $100.

These changes are not limited to new releases; they will also impact existing Pixel devices, although Google has not provided further specifics. It is likely that this includes the Pixel 10a. While the company has not stated when current prices will increase, potential buyers are encouraged to make their purchases sooner rather than later.

Adapting to Market Challenges

In light of these adjustments, Google remains focused on ensuring that its Pixel offerings remain competitive across all tiers. Barkat highlighted that while it is necessary to pass some supplier costs onto consumers, Google is also actively seeking to address these challenges. The company is implementing special strategies aimed at reducing memory requirements across the Android platform and its app ecosystem.

Barkat noted, "Devices can operate with less RAM while still delivering an excellent user experience." He also mentioned that Google's integrated approach involving AI, software, and full-stack silicon enables efficient loading and execution of models on devices.

As Google navigates this complex landscape, consumers can expect efforts to maintain a premium experience at a reasonable cost, along with promotional offers and benefits such as Google One subscriptions.
