The Indonesian esports ecosystem has received a significant boost with the launch of the American Spaces Indonesia Esports Development (ASIED) program. This initiative, a collaboration between the U.S. Embassy in Jakarta, the Indonesian Esports Association (PB ESI), the Odong Prestasi Foundation, and the Garudaku Academy, reached its climax during the Grand Final of the National Esports Championship at @america in Jakarta.
Purpose of ASIED
ASIED aims to develop digital talent by utilizing esports as a platform to enhance skills, expand networks, and strengthen connections among the youth of Indonesia and the United States. This program coincides with two notable milestones for the U.S.: the 250th anniversary of its independence and the upcoming FIFA World Cup 2026.
Impact of Esports on Youth
During the event, Abraham Lee, the Public Affairs Officer at the U.S. Embassy in Jakarta, emphasized how esports has evolved into a medium that unites young people across various countries through a shared passion for gaming. He remarked that esports serves as a powerful tool for fostering cross-cultural and cross-continental connections among youth.
Engagement and Training
Over seven months, ASIED has reached more than 1,750 participants through the American Corner network in seven cities, including Padang, Pontianak, Semarang, Yogyakarta, Malang, Makassar, and Ambon. The program activated over 50 esports communities nationwide.
Rather than merely focusing on competition, participants received training that introduced them to various careers within the esports industry. Topics covered included tournament management, broadcasting, league operations, graphic design, content creation, and game commentary (shoutcasting).
Grand Final Highlights
In the Grand Final, participants engaged in more than just esports matches. The competition featured EA SPORTS FC 26 and EA SPORTS FC Mobile, along with a talent search for shoutcasters judged by professional casters Aqwam and Sanskuyy. The event also included exhibition matches with content creators, a Community Esports Tournament, and a discussion session titled "More than a Game" with the Ministry of Creative Economy, focusing on the role of esports in driving Indonesia's creative economy.
The Grand Final attracted over 300 participants and spectators, showcasing the strong public enthusiasm for the development of the national esports industry. The Creative Economy Minister, Teuku Riefky Harsya, expressed hopes for continued collaboration between Indonesia and the United States through the American Corner network, which is set to expand into various Creative Hubs throughout Indonesia.
As ASIED 2026 concludes, it is clear that esports is no longer just viewed as a competitive game. Through education, skill development, and international collaboration, ASIED exemplifies how the gaming industry can create new career opportunities and strengthen ties between Indonesia and the United States in the digital economy.
