While these devices boast advanced chipsets and innovative silicon-carbon batteries, there’s a significant concern lingering among tech enthusiasts and potential buyers.
Ongoing IP48 Rating Concerns
Samsung has opted to maintain an IP48 rating for its new foldables, a decision that has sparked frustration among consumers. This rating, which has been in place since the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Flip 6 were released in 2024, is seen as inadequate by many. Although it was considered acceptable back then, it now falls short compared to competitors.
Understanding the IP48 Rating
The IP48 rating indicates that the devices are protected against solid objects larger than 1mm, but it does not guarantee protection against dust. This means that while the phones might resist larger particles, they are still vulnerable to smaller debris, such as dust or sand, which can easily infiltrate the device.
Competitors Offering Superior Protection
In contrast, rival foldable smartphones like the HONOR Magic V5 and vivo X Fold 5 have launched with more robust IP58 ratings. These ratings offer better protection against dust and moisture, making them more appealing for everyday use. The Pixel 10 Pro Fold even boasts an impressive IP68 rating, ensuring it is fully sealed against dust ingress.
The Market's Demand for Better Durability
As the foldable phone market continues to evolve, consumers are increasingly prioritizing durability. Other brands, such as OPPO and HUAWEI, are also producing foldable devices with commendable IP ratings while maintaining slim designs and powerful features. Samsung, however, appears to be lagging behind.
While the Galaxy Z Flip 8, Z Fold 8, and Z Fold 8 Ultra may perform well in real-world conditions, the lack of dust protection raises concerns for potential buyers, especially given their high price tags of around $1,200 and $2,100. Consumers are understandably hesitant to invest in devices that may not withstand everyday challenges, such as dusty environments or sandy beaches.
As the market continues to innovate, the expectation for better durability features is becoming the norm rather than the exception. It’s time for Samsung to reevaluate its approach and align with consumer demands for improved dust protection in its foldable devices.
