WhatsApp has officially launched a new feature called Web Calling for its WhatsApp Web platform, allowing users to make and receive both voice and video calls directly from their browser. This innovative feature eliminates the need for a desktop application, streamlining the calling process for users.
Features of WhatsApp Web Calling
Initially, the voice and video calling capabilities were tested in a beta version earlier in 2026, where it was limited to individual calls and a select group of users. Now, WhatsApp has announced a global rollout of this feature, which also supports group calls.
According to WhatsApp's official blog, users can now engage in one-on-one or group calls directly through WhatsApp Web without the hassle of downloading additional software. This development is particularly beneficial for those using shared computers, office laptops that restrict application installations, or users who prefer working in a browser environment.
Enhanced Features for Better User Experience
Though the calls are made through a browser, users will still have access to various features such as screen sharing, call reactions, and a dedicated 'Calls' tab that displays call history and favorite contacts. Additionally, all calls are secured with end-to-end encryption, ensuring privacy during conversations.
Call Transfer and Waiting Room Options
Alongside Web Calling, WhatsApp has introduced a Call Transfer feature, allowing users to seamlessly move ongoing group calls between their mobile devices and WhatsApp Web or Desktop without disconnecting the call. Furthermore, the platform now includes a Waiting Room for group calls, which requires participants to receive approval from the host before joining, enhancing control over group interactions.
Quality Enhancements in New Features
Other significant updates to WhatsApp Web include the introduction of QuickHD, which ensures high-definition video quality is available right from the start of the call. There’s also a Noise Suppression feature designed to minimize background noise, making conversations clearer and more focused.
WhatsApp has stated that these new features are being rolled out gradually and will soon be accessible to all users worldwide. Reports indicate that the Web Calling feature is already functional in various regions, including Indonesia.
Users can initiate Web Calling, whether for individual or group conversations, by clicking the 'Video' icon located in the upper right corner of the chat window.
