This initiative, which was initially reported by Bloomberg in late June 2026, is a collaboration with payment service provider Klarna.
Flexible Monthly Rental Options
With the Apple Upgrade program, users can enjoy renting devices starting at just $17.99 per month for an iPhone, $11.99 for an Apple Watch or iPad, and $24.99 for a Mac. The rental duration is flexible, with options ranging from 12 to 36 months depending on the device.
Device-Specific Rental Plans
For iPhones and Apple Watches, customers can choose between 12-month and 24-month rental plans. In contrast, iPads and Macs are available for 24-month or 36-month agreements. The rental cost varies based on the device model and the length of the contract. For instance, an iPhone 17 Pro with 256 GB storage is priced at $31.99 per month for a 24-month lease or $45.99 for a 12-month lease.
Additional Options After Rental Period
At the end of the rental term, customers have three choices: return the device and terminate the contract, exchange it for a newer model under a new agreement, or pay off the remaining balance to own the device outright. If customers opt to purchase, they only need to pay the difference between the device's price and the total payments made during the rental period. Apple assures that there are no additional fees from Klarna apart from applicable taxes.
How to Access the Program
The Apple Upgrade program is accessible through the Apple Online Store, Apple Store app, and physical Apple retail locations. However, it is currently available only to customers in the United States. Additionally, Apple offers a trade-in option that can reduce monthly payments, allowing the value of the old device to be credited monthly.
To participate in the Apple Upgrade program, customers must meet specific requirements. For iPhone rentals, users are required to activate the device with a postpaid plan from AT&T, Verizon, or T-Mobile.
