This expiration policy is linked to Japan's Payment Services Act, which governs prepaid instruments like gift cards and game codes. Under Article 4, prepaid items that expire within six months are exempt from certain registration, reporting, and security deposit requirements that apply to longer-lasting instruments.
Implications of Regional Regulations
This regulation has prompted companies selling products in Japan to limit the active period of digital codes. The 170-day expiration is still seen as relatively lenient for buyers. However, it's important to note that this restriction only applies to the PlayStation 5 version of GTA 6. The digital codes for Xbox do not have any regional limitations.
Availability and Pricing for Other Regions
Rockstar has confirmed that GTA 6 will be available in both digital and physical formats. The physical edition, which will contain a download code, is set for release on November 12, 2026. Notably, no disc will be included in the packaging.
