In an extraordinary demonstration of product durability, mobile case manufacturer Rhinoshield recently took the iPhone 17 Pro to staggering heights. Instead of a standard drop test, they launched the device wrapped in their AirX case from an altitude exceeding 100,000 feet, approximately 30.6 kilometers.
The Unique Collaboration
This daring stunt was executed in partnership with Sent Into Space, a UK-based aerospace company. The idea was sparked by the introduction of Rhinoshield's AirX product line, which features a blend of strength and recyclability.
Innovative Design Inspired by Safety Features
Rhinoshield stated that the AirX case design draws inspiration from airbag technology used in vehicles and air cushioning systems found in shoes. The case incorporates structures intended to absorb impact energy, enhancing the phone's protection during the fall.
High-Flying Drop from the Stratosphere
The iPhone 17 Pro, encased in the AirX, was ascended to the stratosphere using a balloon, reaching an impressive height of 100,418 feet. This altitude is three times higher than typical commercial airplane cruising levels. After reaching peak height, the phone was released, plummeting freely without parachute assistance.
Breaking Records and Defying Odds
Remarkably, the iPhone 17 Pro functioned perfectly after the extreme drop. This event set a Guinness World Record for the highest drop of a mobile phone in a case onto natural ground without parachute deployment. To qualify for the record, the phone had to land directly on the ground.
The challenges were not limited to impact resistance; the environmental conditions at high altitudes, such as temperature and atmospheric pressure, posed additional hurdles. Rhinoshield prepared extensively, conducting tests in sub-zero conditions to ensure the case and phone could withstand the drop.
Challenges After the Drop
Following the drop, the challenges continued for the Rhinoshield team. The iPhone was released near the Esrange Space Center in northern Sweden, an uninhabited area chosen to minimize risks to the public. However, the vastness of the landscape made locating the device a significant challenge. After narrowing down the landing zone to a two-kilometer radius, the team spent over five hours searching through dense wilderness before finally retrieving the iPhone 17 Pro.
In the end, Guinness World Records confirmed that the phone emerged from its 30.6 km fall without a scratch, a true testament to the resilience of both the device and its innovative case.
