Why Google's Pixel Watch 4 Outshines Galaxy Watch 9

The Galaxy Watch 9 has recently been launched, offering several updates to Samsung's leading smartwatch. If you own an older Galaxy Watch, the new version represents a significant upgrade. However, those who upgraded to the Galaxy Watch 8 might find the changes less impressive, as many features are reminiscent of previous models.

As I ponder my smartwatch choices today, I can’t help but consider waiting for Google’s Pixel Watch 5, expected later this fall, which may introduce more notable enhancements than what Samsung has presented. For anyone looking to purchase a smartwatch right now, here are my reasons for favoring the Pixel Watch 4 over the Galaxy Watch 9.

Design: Aesthetics Matter

Beauty is subjective, yet I firmly believe that the design of a smartwatch plays a crucial role. This year, I still stand by my view that the Galaxy Watch's squircle design lacks the elegance of traditional round timepieces. Instead, it presents a more industrial look that, in my opinion, does not resonate well.

Conversely, the Pixel Watch boasts a sleek, pebble-like design that stands out in the market. The domed glass gives it a refined appearance, and after several iterations, I no longer worry about its durability. It’s exceptionally comfortable to wear, adapting well to my wrist whether I’m exercising or sleeping. In my view, the Pixel Watch is the most stylish Android smartwatch available.

Software Experience: A Matter of Preference

One of the key points I noted during my hands-on with the Galaxy Watch 9 was the introduction of the Raise to Talk feature, which is something Pixel Watch users have enjoyed for some time. This highlights Google’s advantage in software experience.

While both devices operate on Wear OS, the Pixel Watch aligns closely with Google’s vision for the platform. In contrast, Samsung overlays its One UI, which some users may find familiar and appealing. However, I prefer the streamlined experience of Google's interface, which feels like a natural extension of my smartphone.

Health Tracking: Google’s Edge

Samsung Health has certainly evolved significantly over the years, earning its share of praise. Nonetheless, I still favor Google’s health platform, which has rebranded Fitbit as Google Health. Fitbit has long been a reliable choice for both new and seasoned wearable enthusiasts, offering user-friendly health insights.

The updated interface is intuitive, and customizable dashboards allow me to highlight the data that matters most. The coaching feature, powered by Gemini, is a nice addition for Premium subscribers. However, I still believe that Google excels at presenting health data, from sleep analysis to overall recovery metrics.

Accuracy: Trustworthy Insights

Among all smartwatch features, accuracy is paramount to me. After testing numerous devices, I’ve learned that not all optical sensors perform equally. The Pixel Watch 4’s heart rate monitoring has consistently matched the readings from my chest strap, providing a level of trust that’s crucial.

This reliability is essential since accurate heart rate data serves as the foundation for tracking various health metrics, including sleep, training load, recovery, and stress levels. While Samsung’s accuracy has improved, I prefer to rely on a watch that has proven its dependability time and again.

While the Galaxy Watch 9 is a solid device and may suit many Samsung users, it feels as though Samsung is merely refining its product this year, whereas Google is enhancing the overall experience. Until the Pixel Watch 5 is released, I would confidently recommend the Pixel Watch 4 as the smartwatch worth investing in.
