Samsung Sees Rise in iPhone Users Switching to Foldable Phones

As consumer interest in foldable smartphones surges, Samsung is strategically positioning itself to benefit from this trend, especially with Apple's recent entry into the market. The South Korean electronics giant appears to be successfully attracting customers eager for innovative mobile devices.

Noteworthy Growth in User Transition

According to a Samsung spokesperson, referenced in a report by CNBC, the global percentage of iOS users transitioning to the latest Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8, launched in July, has increased significantly. This shift is now 1.6 times greater than that observed during the previous generation, which included the Galaxy Z Fold7 and Flip7.

Samsung's Pioneering Role in Foldable Phones

Samsung has been at the forefront of the foldable smartphone category since introducing its first Galaxy Fold model in 2019. This innovation laid the groundwork for the brand's continued dominance in a rapidly evolving market.

Apple's Entry with the iPhone Duo

Recently, Apple unveiled its first foldable device, the iPhone Duo, marking a significant product launch under the leadership of CEO John Ternus. This entry into the foldable space is expected to energize competition within the market.

Insights on Consumer Preferences

In the United States, a notable 30% of buyers of the Galaxy Z Flip8 have switched from competing smartphone brands, with many of these customers purchasing a foldable phone for the very first time. Samsung highlights that Galaxy Z Fold8 buyers are particularly drawn to its slim and lightweight design, which enhances multitasking and content consumption. Meanwhile, customers opting for the Fold8 Ultra appreciate its expansive screen and additional workspace, often eliminating the need for a separate tablet.

Facilitating the Transition for iPhone Users

Furthermore, Samsung is committed to easing the transition for iPhone users between different ecosystems. The company recently improved its Smart Switch feature, allowing iPhone users to wirelessly transfer data to Galaxy devices by simply scanning a QR code, without requiring the Smart Switch app on their iPhones.

Future Market Predictions

As it stands, Samsung is projected to maintain its lead in the global foldable smartphone market, aiming for a 32% share this year. However, competition is expected to intensify with Apple anticipated to capture a 25% market share as it enters this segment. Additionally, Huawei remains a strong competitor in China, according to data from Counterpoint Research.
