Just one day after its launch, the iPhone Duo faced rigorous durability tests to evaluate its resilience. Renowned tech reviewer Zach Nelson, popularly known as JerryRigEverything, conducted a series of extreme tests that can only be described as torture for the device.
Testing the iPhone Duo's Screen Durability
In a detailed 15-minute video, Nelson put the iPhone Duo through its paces using fire, sand, gravel, chains, and knives to assess its resistance to scratches and pressure. He began by scratching both the external and internal displays of the device. The external screen, protected by Ceramic Shield 2, showed scratches at a level 7 on the Mohs scale, indicating a fair level of toughness.
Conversely, the internal display exhibited scratches at a level 2. Despite Nelson praising the nano-textured matte finish of the iPhone Duo for its ability to mask some scratches, he noted that this feature was not sufficient to fully protect the device from damage.
Further Durability Challenges
Using a variety of materials such as chains, sand, dust, and gravel, Nelson pushed the tests further. Although the iPhone Duo boasts an IP68 rating, which suggests it is resistant to dust and water, dust managed to infiltrate the device’s hinge through small gaps. This intrusion compromised the magnets that help keep the phone closed, raising concerns about its long-term durability.
Bending Tests and Display Damage
Nelson proceeded to open the iPhone Duo and attempted to bend it multiple times. As anticipated, the device's frame bent, leading to cracks appearing on the main screen. This bending test raised alarms, especially regarding the risk of damaging the display permanently. The test resulted in a permanent green line appearing on the main screen, ultimately rendering it inoperative. This serves as a critical warning against applying pressure to the iPhone Duo when the screen is open.
User Reports and Ongoing Concerns
The iPhone Duo's durability has drawn significant attention, particularly after multiple users reported problems with the main display. Various posts on Reddit showcased instances of the screen exhibiting a 'lightsaber' effect, where permanent lines appeared along the hinge and the right side of the screen. These findings highlight potential weaknesses in the device’s design, making it imperative for prospective buyers to consider these factors before making a purchase.
As the first generation of the iPhone Duo, these durability tests have raised important questions about its reliability in everyday use, especially given the extreme scenarios it was subjected to. Users should remain cautious about the device's limitations as more reviews and user feedback emerge.
